Counselor Denise Powers Can Help Cancer Patients Through Journey
Cancer Navigators’ counseling program seeks to help patients maintain a sense of control over their lives and manage the impact of the cancer diagnosis as they focus on getting well and coping with resulting life changes.
Counselor Denise Powers holds one-hour, individual sessions and works through current and previous issues with the goal of getting patients to live in the present and not worry about the past or future. Powers also teaches patients stress management skills and breathing techniques.
Powers has been with Cancer Navigators since 2007 and leads all counseling sessions. She has more than 35 years of experience in counseling and uses a variety of approaches to assist cancer patients, caregivers, and loved ones in coping with the emotions and changes/challenges that cancer brings.
There is not a per-patient limit to the number of sessions. Powers evaluates each patient to determine his/her progress. Cancer Navigators also hosts a weekly support group and patients who no longer require private counseling are encouraged to attend.
When Cancer Navigators receives counseling referrals from oncologists/healthcare providers, Powers calls the patients to introduce them to Cancer Navigators. Their first counseling session will also be scheduled.
She can talk to the patient over the phone or meet in-person, depending on the patient’s wishes. When patients begin counseling, many start with one session per week and gradually reduce sessions to bi-monthly, then monthly. Powers will remain in contact with counseling patients and checks-in even when they don’t have a session scheduled.
