‘Just My Type’: Lee Walburn book of favorite columns still available at Cancer Navigator office

October 17, 2014 · News

JustMyType_CoverAward-winning journalist Lee Walburn is publishing a compilation of his columns from the past five decades – “Just My Type, 50 Years Preserved in Ink.”

The book is not for his own gain or glory. A cancer survivor, Walburn decided the time was right because he wants to help a cause close to his heart. So all proceeds from the book will benefit Cancer Navigators, a Rome-based nonprofit that helps cancer patients in Northwest Georgia and their loved ones on their journey.

Walburn is known for his heartfelt storytelling about everyday life. He prefers celebrating the brighter side of experiences rather than the grave. “I trust there are enough of you who won’t consider me foolish just because I frequently break out in a rash of good nature in this book, as well as in my latest incarnation as Saturday columnist for the Rome News-Tribune. I have decided that if I can’t enlighten the world, I will see if I can make it grin.”

Though he’s currently a beloved columnist for the Rome News- Tribune, Walburn’s writing and editing chops are known throughout Georgia and beyond.  Under his 15-year leadership as editor-in-chief of Atlanta Magazine, it won more than 200 awards for excellence, more than 80 of them national awards. He was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the national City and Regional Magazine Association and is a member of the Georgia Magazine Association Hall of Fame. As a writer he has won national, regional and state awards for magazine stories and for his columns.

Other authors are eager to herald Walburn’s writing. “It all begins with talent. Lee’s is God-given, but fine-tuned in a mill village where taking notice of things was an exercise in survival as well as a primer lesson in human behavior. He has always understood his writing was not about himself, but about the people and the events that became his subject matter,” says Terry Kay, a member of the Georgia Writers’ Hall of Fame and author of 14 books.

“Lee Walburn’s irresistible stories, laced with humor and heart, beg to be read twice: once for the sheer pleasure of it, and again to discover the higher truth,” writes Deborah Paul, author of “From Here to Maturity: Confessions of a Kid at Heart” and recipient of the City and Regional Magazine Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Walburn said it’s important to him that this retrospective book will help others facing cancer. It’s a challenge both he and his dear wife Jackie have both faced.

“At times small commercial presses have suggested publication of my writings covering the past 50 years. I have resisted. Chances of commercial success are small and I have arrived at an age when ego is overshadowed by more pressing matters. However, when Cancer Navigators Executive Director Charlotte Atkins zeroed in on the idea of this book as a fundraiser for a wonderful organization I seized on the prospect of at last doing something worthwhile with my words.”

Says, Atkins, “What a wonderful gift this is from Lee – to the patients it will help navigate through their treatment as well as to all the readers who will get to enjoy a collection of his incredible storytelling talent.  If you love Lee’s writing, this is a must-have. We hope folks will buy their own copies and then by extras to give as gifts. If by some chance you have never read Lee’s columns, then you are in for a major treat when you pick up ‘Just My Type.’”
